Ari Aster Has An Idea For A 'Hereditary' Sequel
It’s unlikely to happen.
Ari Aster’s debut feature, Hereditary, hit theaters in 2018, and the horror genre hasn’t been the same since. While promoting his upcoming feature, Beau Is Afraid, Aster stopped by the American Cinematheque’s Aero Theater for a Q+A as a part of a double feature of his two previous films, Hereditary and Midsommar. During the conversation moderated by Joshua Rothkopf, Aster was asked if A24 had approached him about sequels of either of his previous two films, to which he responded,
“I have an idea for a sequel to Hereditary… Who knows if I’ll ever do it.”
While this response sent shockwaves into the crowd, Aster remained tight-lipped as to what his idea for the sequel may be, but that didn’t stop the audience in the Aero to begin whispering between each other with ideas of what a Hereditary sequel may entail.
Hereditary, which originally premiered at Sundance, was released on June 8, 2018, to a $13.5 million opening from slightly under 3,000 theaters. The film went on to gross over $80 million during its theatrical run and was A24’s highest-grossing film until it was dethroned by Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2022. Hereditary follows Annie Graham (Toni Collette), a woman who, after losing her mother, begins to unravel the supernatural secrets surrounding her family. The film also stars Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, and Gabriel Byrne in the primary cast.
Hereditary is available to watch on HBO Max, as well as being available for rent and purchase on VOD platforms. Ari Aster’s latest film, Beau Is Afraid, arrives in select theaters this Friday, April 14.
