Emma Stone Is Reanimated In The First Trailer For 'Poor Things'
One of the most highly anticipated films this year is Poor Things, the latest from director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Favourite). This morning, Searchlight Pictures released the film’s first trailer —a 30-second teaser with a single line of dialogue— ahead of this month’s Cannes premiere. Unlike many of Lanthimos’ previous films, Poor Things is adapted from the 1992 novel written by Alasdair Gray, written for the screen by Alasdair Gray and Tony McNamara.
The film follows Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), Poor Things’ “Frankenstein’s Monster,” so to speak. In this case, Bella is a woman brought back to life by scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), and she’s eager to explore this rejuvenated world. For slightly more of an explanation of the film’s story, Bella was pregnant when she passed, and was reincarnated with the brain of the child inside her body. The film, which releases this September, stars Stone, Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Margaret Qualley, Christopher Abbott, Ramy Youssef, and Jerrod Carmichael.
“From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.” — Searchlight Pictures
