First Teaser For 'Ahsoka' Brings The 'Rebels' To Live Action
Warrior. Outcast. Rebel. Jedi.
This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Rebels
During last year’s Star Wars Celebration, it was only those in attendance who were given a sneak peek at the upcoming Ahsoka series, but that’s not the case this year. As a part of Lucasfilm’s Studio Showcase during this year’s SWCE, the team behind Ahsoka took to the stage and brought numerous surprises with them for those in attendance and fans at home. The series, which follows Ahsoka Tano after we left off with her in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, resumes her journey with the Rebels to search for Ezra Bridger and bring him home. The live-action Disney+ series serves as what can be regarded as a direct sequel to Star Wars: Rebels, an animated series that was also created by Dave Filoni.
Filoni himself was on stage to introduce the cast of Ahsoka today, welcoming Rosario Dawson, who plays the titular character, Natasha Liu Bordizzo (The Voyeurs), who was confirmed to be playing Sabine Wren during last year’s Celebration, and adding Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), who confirmed her casting as Hera Syndulla in the series. The three actors took to the stage in a moment that made many veteran Rebels fans get emotional, standing in front of the 4500+ fans in the room with stills of their characters on the screen behind them.
The footage from the trailer made it clear that, while the primary focus of the Ahsoka series is the search for Ezra (now played by Eman Esfandi), the series will also focus on Ahsoka’s journey in this new period of Star Wars as she navigates the challenges brought up by the empire’s defeat and the potential return of Grand Admiral Thrawn and a new empire. Certain shots in the trailer may look familiar to viewers because they are almost exact shot-for-shot recreations of scenes from the Star Wars: Rebels series finale, which is where the bulk of this story will pick up from.
The last time we saw Ezra and Thrawn, they were on a ship being carried by Purrgils at lightspeed to an unknown sector of the Star Wars galaxy. It’s unclear how much of the Ahsoka series will focus on the search for Ezra and Thrawn rather than the potential fallout of their return. Other than the return of the Rebels, the most notable appearance in the trailer came from Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson), a force user wielding an orange Lightsaber facing off against Ahsoka. This character is new to the universe for the show, and we don’t yet have any information about Baylan, but hope to soon.
