New Releases This Summer

Nearing the end of June means only one thing, summer is truly here! Join us as we look ahead toward the new content for the rest of this summer before some of us unfortunately pick up scholastic responsibilities.

June:

This past month — we’ve seen four large theatrical releases, with other feature films releasing to streaming. Before we talk about releases in June, we can’t pass over what may be the movie of the summer, Top Gun: Maverick. Utilizing nostalgia and a tad bit of Miles Teller thirst traps, Tom Cruise’s most recent feature film solidified two things for him. It demonstrated that Tom Cruise truly is a movie star for the ages, and this film was also Cruise’s first film to gross more than one billion dollars at the box office.

The four largest films of June were Lightyear, Jurassic World: Dominion, Elvis (click here to read our review), and The Black Phone. With all of these films having successful box office releases, Jurassic World grossed the most, bringing in more than 300 million dollars.

Although this film may not have had the most central plot structure, it to played into the recent trope of nostalgia by bringing back original cast members Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neil.

Other semi notable releases from this month in film include Hollywood Stargirl (Disney+), Hustle (Netflix), which has once again received praise for Adam Sandler in a dramatic role, and Spiderhead (Netflix) being the second installment of a Miles Teller summer.

As for television releases this month, we were met with Ms. Marvel (Disney+) for which we have an upcoming interview with the director of episodes 4&5, Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy (Netflix), Season 2 of Only Murders In The Building (Hulu) which has just become the Top TV Show of All-Time on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 100%, based on 141 total reviews as of 6/28, and Apple TV+’s Loot.

July:

When talking about new content in the month of July, it’s only fitting to start with the 1st of the month. And on this Friday, we’re not only receiving Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2, but Minions: The Rise Of Gru! With the buildup for the sequel to Minions (2015) being at an all time high, internet and social hype is through the roof. Whether you’re in it for Bob, Kevin, or even Gru, it’s almost a certainty that at least someone you know will see it this holiday weekend.

The rest of the month brings other exciting projects to the theater, including Thor: Love And Thunder, Paws Of Fury: The Legend Of Hank, Where The Crawdads Sing, DC’s League Of Superpets, and Jordan Peele’s NOPE. Thor: Love And Thunder marks Chris Hemsworth’s 11th year as the god of thunder, and makes him the first MCU actor to receive four solo projects. Taika Waititi returns to direct after directing 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. Additionally, supporting cast members Tessa Thompson, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillian, Russel Crowe, and more return with two of Marvel’s largest names in Natalie Portman and Christian Bale will grace the screen on July 8.

As far as streaming and TV go, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series begins it’s third season on Disney+, Netflix will receive season 8 of The Flash, as well as a release of their original movie, The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Ana De Armas. Prime Video will release a new militaristic movie led by Chris Pratt, titled The Terminal List, and HBO Max will debut their new Pretty Little Liars spin off.

August:

As for August, things seem to mellow out after the stacked month that is July. With Bullet Train releasing August 5, aside from the Predator prequel, Prey, the rest of the month feels somewhat empty in theaters. Disney+ expects two releases from Marvel, with I Am Groot beginning on August 10, and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law airing one week after, on August 17.
