‘ELVIS' Review

Baz Luhrmann’s ‘ELVIS’ is a true theatrical experience.

Told through the eyes of Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker, we follow a young Elvis Presley through his rise to stardom. Following a trend of musical biopics which began with ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in 2019, we yet again have a film where we know the protagonist perishes.

Directed by Baz Luhrmann, this film will obviously have his signature flash and flare. But as far as it goes for being a biography, the film doesn’t provide any information that the average fan wouldn’t be able to find in a few minutes. Unfortunately, this also means that the actors’ performances will be limited to the constraints of history.

Austin Butler, however, truly transforms himself into the role of Elvis Presley, and is able to bring a new light to a character that many have failed to portray. Tom Hanks luckily brings some light and depth to the Colonel Tom Parker, but he himself is restricted by the immense amount of prosthetics and makeup required by his character.

Overall, ‘ELVIS’ provides enjoyment and is certainly a good watch. If the film accomplishes anything, it’s launched a shining career for Austin Butler.
