In a surprising last-minute move, Sony Pictures pushed up the social embargo for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and most critics seem to be raving about the film. Our chief film critic Eze Baum caught the film earlier this year and was ultimately disappointed in the way that the film sets its priorities, saying that “[Across the Spider-Verse] fails to come close to where the original is for me, mainly due to the fact that it prioritizes fan service over a strong story.

The long-awaited sequel to 2018’s Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse picks up roughly one year after the first film, and follows Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as he navigates the hard balance of being a teenager and being Spider-Man while being introduced to the Spider Society led by Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), and his feelings for Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld). Read the film’s synopsis below:

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.” — Sony Pictures
