Our Top 5 Films of 2022 (So far)

Today is the halfway mark of the year, and because of that it feels like an appropriate time to rank our favorite films that have come out this year.

5.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness was Marvel’s first theatrical addition to the year, and with Sam Raimi directing, we had high expectations. Aside from all of the speculations floating around on the internet, the film did have some good aspects to it, but unfortunately lacked plot and also had moments that just felt out of place. This isn’t to say that the movie didn’t have good moments and outstanding cinematography at times, but it just didn’t feel as solid as the rest of the movies on this list.

4.

The Batman brought us our third live action take of batman in the last 20 years, and it didn’t disappoint. Initially, fans were skeptical of Robert Pattinson portraying the caped crusader, but with a sequel on the way, our expectations remain high. What we know about the sequel is limited, but we do know that Robert Pattinson and Jeffery Wright will return as Batman and Commissioner Gordon, respectively.

3.

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis defines what it means to be theatrical. With stunning graphics and visuals, Luhrmann truly pushed the limits of what we can see on screen, and partnered this with a strong score and soundtrack, with the film’s official soundtrack being almost two hours long. Aside from all of that, Austin Butler delivers a transformative performance in the role of Elvis, and all of his prep work paid off. If you want to hear more of our thoughts, read our review here.

2.

If any movie truly deserves the number one spot, it’s Everything Everywhere All At Once. But let me explain why it’s just not at the top for us. This movie is essentially perfect. It has character development, phenomenal acting, a good plot, and is a multiverse movie done right. And although it’s our frontrunner for best picture for awards season, it lacks the one thing that solidifies our number one, nostalgia.

1.

Top Gun: Maverick. This movie is everything. I can say that I felt things when watching this. Excitement, sadness, pure adrenaline, and everything in between. Tom Cruise does a fantastic job at returning to Maverick more than 30 years, and seeing Val Kilmer’s Iceman was truly a thing of beauty. New cast members Miles Teller and Glen Powell give stellar performances, and Jennifer Connelly’s performance as Penny gave the film an emotional driving factor. This is the kind of movie you could watch with a friend, a parent, a partner, or literally anyone. This movie is great. End of discussion.
