Toronto Film Festival Announces First 2024 Selections; Tribute Awards
As the first half of 2024 nears its end, the film industry looks towards the fall, bringing with it a slew of festivals, awards, and tributes.
The Toronto International Film Festival, a September mainstay, and temperature-checker in the awards race, announced the first selections in its 2024 program Tuesday morning, as well as two artists the festival will pay tribute to.
Films selected for the festival thus far include R.J. Cutler and David Furnish’s documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, Woo Min-ho’s Harbin, Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck, Marielle Heller’s Nightbitch, Sydney Freeland’s Rez Ball, and Chris Sanders’ The Wild Robot.
All six announced selections will have their world premieres in Toronto.
Additionally, the festival announced it will honor Amy Adams with the TIFF Tribute Performer Award and David Cronenberg with the Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award at the annual TIFF Tribute Awards ceremony on September 8. Sandra Oh will serve as the inaugural Tribute Awards Honorary Chair.
“In the five years that TIFF has been honoring such standout talent as Joaquin Phoenix, Michelle Yeoh, Jessica Chastain, Chloe Zhao, Taika Waititi, and Ari Wegner on their road to further awards success, we’ve been inspired to watch our Tribute Awards gala grow into a must-attend event,” said TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey. “This year, we’re thrilled to welcome the incomparable Sandra Oh as the inaugural honorary Chair of the 2024 Tribute Awards. She joins our first-announced honourees, Amy Adams and David Cronenberg, in what promises to be another singular, sparkling night during the Festival. We’re grateful that artists of this stature will gather in Toronto to help TIFF turn the spotlight on increasing inclusion throughout our industry.”
For Adams, a Best Actress contender with Nightbitch, being honored by the festival is a welcome sight on the campaign trail. In recent years, TIFF honorees Joaquin Phoenix, Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Chastain, and Brendan Fraser all went on to receive Oscars in the same year.
Last year’s honoree, Colman Domingo, was nominated for his role in Rustin and is expected to be nominated again this year for his work in Sing Sing, which had its world premiere at last year’s Toronto Festival.
The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival is set to run from September 5-15.
