Feels Like Home — Our Review Of 'Cars on the Road'

The latest installment in the Cars series, Cars on the Road follows Mater (Larry The Cable Guy) & McQueen (Owen Wilson) as they go on a cross-country road trip to the wedding of Mater’s sister.

The show finds itself comedically almost instantly, as it brings a fresh feel to this universe. While some of the jokes don’t land as well as you’d hope, it’s reminiscent of classic comedy shows, featuring a cold-open that ends on a joke and cuts to the show’s intro and theme, composed by Jake Monaco.

Each episode has its own feel and style, but certain segments feel reminiscent of past films. This is especially highlighted in episode two, which gives us about the closest thing we can get to a Cars horror movie, which must be described as The Shining meets Haunted Mansion.

Fans of the films will recognize nostalgia scattered throughout every episode, while younger viewers will be drawn in by the bold visual style. Even though the series is clearly catered toward the younger audience, past viewers of all ages will be able to enjoy the series as it’s great to watch solo or with family.

Certain episodes stand out more than others, but the entire series plays well.

There is one discussion point that can’t go unnoted: Would this be better as a movie? Although most episodes are stand-alone stories, they do roll into each other somewhat efficiently. That being said, with slight modifications to the story and pacing to give everything more of a flow and specified plot, it would certainly work. Additionally, the added time might allow for 1-2 short stories, and those could certainly fill out the gaps in the plot.

The show certainly accomplishes its goal of bringing these characters to a new audience and paves a bright path for the future of the saga. Out of all the Disney+ Day releases, Cars on the Road should certainly be near the top of your list.
