Netflix's 'The Sandman': The Right Way To Adapt A Comic Book?
Few comic/graphic novel series are as beloved as The Sandman, so fans were aptly excited when the television adaptation was announced. It’s been three years since the announcement of the adaptation for Netflix, and fans’ anticipation has only grown, the pinnacles of which have been during DC Fandome and San Diego Comic-Con.
Following Morpheus, Lord Of The Dream, The Sandman tells the tale of Morpheus as he attempts to regain his possessions after being in captivity. With The Sandman author Neil Gaiman at the helm of the series, it’s been very clear that the show will stay faithful to the books and the vision of its creator.
To define the visual beauty of the show as standard and nothing out of the ordinary simply isn’t fair. Using beautifully crafted visuals is one of the many great things that the show brings to the table.
The cinematography is outstanding, featuring incredibly creative shots which pair nicely with the visuals.
Tom Sturridge gives as comic accurate a performance as you can while portraying the titular character, and the supporting cast does their job and helps Sturridge create a convincing world of dreams.
The first episode which follows Dream in captivity, tells a beautiful story of power and legacy, and finds the perfect balance of pacing a tale of decades in under an hour.
As we’ve only been given a glimpse into the show, our thoughts will evolve as time passes and we see the remaining 8 episodes.
