DC Studios Chapter One Slate Reveals 10 New Projects

When it was announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran would take over as the new heads of DC Studios, it was unclear what projects would be canned and which existing films and series would be a part of their new universe. We don’t have to guess anymore, as DC Studios has revealed their entire slate for their first phase, titled “Gods and Monsters.” DC’s first chapter will feature five films and five TV shows, with characters such as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and the Amazonians.

Superman: Legacy will kick off the era of new films in the DC universe and will follow arguably the most iconic comic-book character of all time. Gunn has made it very clear that this isn’t the same Superman origin story we’ve seen on film before, but a story that addresses Superman’s identity and who he is as a character. Henry Cavill will not be returning to the character after having been the Man of Steel since 2011. Superman: Legacy will release on July 11, 2025.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be one of DC’s first five films and will be adapted from Tom King’s 2022 comic run of the same name. During their presentation, Gunn and Safran alluded to a darker Supergirl, saying,

“She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Sasha Calle is portraying Supergirl in the upcoming The Flash movie, but it’s unclear if she will be returning, as no cast or crew for the film have been announced. There is currently no release date for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but you can expect it to release between 2025-2027.

The Brave and the Bold: DC’s first Batman film will be entirely separate from Matt Reeves’ Batman universe, which will be expanding with its second film, releasing in October of 2025. DC Studios main universe Batman film will follow Batman and Robin, who in this case will be Damien Wayne. There is no actor attached to play Bruce Wayne / Batman, but it is confirmed that no current Batman actor will be in the running. Additionally, there is no director attached to the film, but Ben Affleck has expressed his interest in directing a DC project.

Swamp Thing will highlight the the origins of the character who has had two movies and a TV show. This is an example of the darker tone that DC Studios is aiming for, featuring darker characters alongside mainstream characters. There is no cast or crew attached, but there is a rumored director — with no confirmations.

The Authority: An obscure team of superheroes that get the job done no matter what. A basic story for the film has been outlined, and revolves around The Authority, a team created after StormWatch, a defense team against aliens. The team includes The Engineer,  Jeroen Thornedike, Apollo and Midnighter. No cast and crew have been revealed, and there is no public release date.

Lanterns: A Green Lantern series will finally be happening at HBO Max, and will be replacing the previously in-development John Stewart series. This new Green Lantern series will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart, and has been described as a very important show in the overall story that Gunn and Safran are building for their DC universe. There is no cast and crew attached, and no set release date.

An Amanda Waller spin-off series (Waller) is coming to HBO Max within a few years, with Viola Davis confirmed to return as the titular character. Gunn is crafting the series as an in-between project for him as he develops Superman: Legacy and season two of Peacemaker. Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol) are tapped to write the show.

Creature Commandos: An animated TV series that follows a team of military superhumans made of humans and non-humans alike. Gunn announced that following his post-credit appearance in The Suicide Squad, Weasel will be a part of this team.
